It is easily understood that a mining operation comes to a grinding halt without functional pumps. Great care must be given to their maintenance- expenses resulting from repair and replacement can quickly bankrupt an operation. Apart from the wetted parts, many others will undergo regular wear and tear, including the expeller, expeller ring, pump case, shaft sleeve, mechanical seal, shaft, and bracket. Several factors affect the life of a slurry pump, including the properties of the material, the characteristics of the medium, and the structure and hydraulic parameters of the pump. Operating conditions must also be considered, but are not as highly prioritized.

Corrosion and abrasion present the two greatest risks to the function of a pump. Regular pumping of chemicals, salts, and acids can result in corrosion, or slow dissolution of the materials a pump is constructed from. Abrasion occurs from constant friction from hard, sharp materials passing through a pump, resulting in layers being scraped away.

The factors affecting slurry pump spares working life include:

1. Medium characteristics- Are they abrasive or corrosive? Are they dense or viscous, etc.?
2. Material characteristics of the wear parts- What are the pump parts made of (e.g., chrome, rubber, ceramic)?
3. Interaction between slurry and material of wear parts- Was the correct part material selected? Were the medium characteristics considered to prevent abrasion and corrosion?

Several factors must be considered to improve the life of a pump’s wetted parts, as we previously mentioned, including correct material selection and pump selection, as well as hydraulic design. Among the most important include the following:

1. Rheological properties of solid-liquid mixtures- How do these mixtures flow? Are they dense, foamy, or viscous?

• The size, shape, hardness, and density of solid particles- Are they highly abrasive? Will they frequently clog the pump or pipe?

• The structure and parameters of the pump- Are they sufficient for the operation?

• The speed of the pump or the peripheral speed of the impeller

• The properties of pump materials, such as hardness, strength (elongation, acid and alkali resistance, heat resistance, etc.)
